Squirrel control in Doncaster

Thumping in the loft during the day, chewed insulation, or a squirrel running along the gutter? Grey squirrels in a roof space can chew wiring and timbers, so it's worth dealing with quickly.

Squirrels or rats?

Both make noise in lofts, but at different times. Squirrels are active in daylight, especially early in the morning and around dusk, and sound heavier, with thumping and rolling. Rats are mostly active at night and sound like scratching and scurrying. Squirrels also leave chewed timber, shredded insulation and sometimes nests of leaves.

Why they're a problem

Grey squirrels chew constantly. In a loft that means damaged insulation, stored belongings and timbers and, most seriously, electrical cables, which are a fire risk. They usually get in through gaps at the eaves, behind fascias and soffits, or where trees overhang the roof.

What the law says

Grey squirrels are classed as an invasive species. Under the Invasive Alien Species Order 2019 it's illegal to release a grey squirrel once it's been caught, so catch-and-release isn't an option. Squirrels caught in live traps have to be humanely dispatched by someone trained to do it.

How we deal with them

We find the ways in and how many squirrels are using them, then remove them with traps that are checked at least once a day. Once the loft is clear, the entry points need proofing with mesh or new soffit and fascia sections, or the next squirrel will move straight in. Cutting back branches within a couple of metres of the roof helps too.

What it costs

Squirrel removal in the UK typically costs £150 to £350 per job in 2026 (Fantastic Services). Proofing is priced separately once we've seen the roof. You get a fixed price before we start.

Questions people ask

Can't you just catch the squirrel and let it go somewhere else?

Not legally. Releasing a grey squirrel is an offence under the Invasive Alien Species Order 2019, so a caught grey squirrel has to be humanely dispatched. Red squirrels are protected, but you're very unlikely to find one in a Doncaster loft.

When are squirrels most likely to get into lofts?

Grey squirrels breed twice a year, in late winter and early summer, and look for sheltered nest sites before each. Lofts are attractive in cold weather too.

Do repellents work?

Smell and sound repellents rarely keep squirrels out for long. Removing them and blocking the way in is what works.
