Signs of bed bugs

  • Itchy bites in lines or clusters on skin that's uncovered in bed, like the arms, neck and shoulders
  • Small blood spots on sheets and pillowcases
  • Tiny dark spots (droppings) along mattress seams, the bed frame and the headboard
  • Pale shed skins and, in bigger infestations, a sweet, musty smell
  • The bugs themselves: flat, oval and reddish-brown, about the size of an apple pip

Bites alone aren't proof. People react differently, and other insects bite too. Dark spots along the seams of the mattress are a much better sign.

How they get in

Bed bugs don't mean a home is dirty. They travel in luggage, clothing and second-hand furniture, so they're often picked up in hotels and holiday lets, and they spread between flats through gaps in walls and floors.

How we treat them

We inspect the bed, furniture and the rooms around it to find out how far they've spread. Treatment is usually one of two types:

  • Insecticide treatment, applied to the bed, furniture and the edges of the room. It normally takes at least two visits about two weeks apart, to catch bugs that hatch from eggs after the first.
  • Heat treatment, which raises the room to a temperature that kills bugs and eggs. It's often done in a single visit but costs more.

Before the first visit you'll get a preparation list. It usually includes washing bedding and clothes from the room at 60°C, bagging things up, and not moving furniture or belongings into other rooms.

What it costs

Bed bugs cost more to treat than most pests because it's slow, careful work. UK guide prices for 2026 run from about £100 to £550 for one room, depending on the method and number of visits, and £700 to £2,000 for a whole flat or house (Fantastic Services, Whito). You get a fixed price after the inspection.

Don't do this

  • Don't use bug bombs or foggers. They rarely reach bugs hidden in seams and cracks, and they can drive them into other rooms.
  • Don't move to another bedroom to escape them. They'll follow and spread.
  • Don't throw the mattress out before it's been inspected. It can usually be treated, and dragging it through the house can spread bugs.

Questions people ask

Do I need to throw my mattress away?

Usually not. Most mattresses can be treated. If one is badly damaged or heavily infested you'll be told, and it should be wrapped in plastic before it's moved.

How long does bed bug treatment take to work?

With insecticide, you should see far fewer signs after the first visit, and the second visit about two weeks later deals with any that hatch from eggs. Heat treatment works on the day. Either way, keep an eye out for new bites or spots for a few weeks afterwards.

Can I stay at home during treatment?

Yes, but you, your children and your pets will need to stay out of the treated rooms for a few hours until the surfaces are dry.
