Signs of fleas
- Small itchy bites, usually around the ankles and lower legs
- Pets scratching, biting at their fur or losing hair
- Tiny dark insects jumping on carpets, rugs or pet bedding
- Black specks (flea dirt) on pet bedding that turn red on damp kitchen roll
Why they're hard to get rid of
Adult fleas on a pet are only a small part of the problem. Most of a flea population is eggs, larvae and pupae in carpets, rugs, sofas and pet beds. Pupae are protected inside a cocoon and can wait weeks or months for a warm body to pass, which is why fleas often appear in a home that's been empty for a while, or after a pet has gone.
How we treat them
We treat carpets, rugs, soft furnishings and pet areas with an insecticide spray that also stops eggs and larvae developing. Your pets need treating with a product from your vet at the same time, or the fleas will come back. You'll need to stay out of the treated rooms for a few hours until it's dry.
After treatment, vacuum every day for at least two weeks. The vibration makes pupae hatch, and the new fleas then meet the treatment. It's normal to see some fleas for a week or two afterwards.

Questions people ask
Why am I still seeing fleas after treatment?
Fleas inside their cocoons aren't affected until they hatch. Vacuuming every day brings them out so they meet the treatment. Seeing some for up to two weeks is normal. If they're still around after that, call us.
Should I wash the carpets after treatment?
Not for at least two weeks. Washing or shampooing carpets removes the treatment before it's done its job. Vacuuming is fine, and it helps.
We don't have pets. Where have the fleas come from?
Often from a previous occupant's pet, or from cats, foxes or birds getting into a loft, under a floor or around the house. We look for the source as well as treating.
