Contracts

A pest control contract means a set number of routine visits a year, usually every six to eight weeks for food businesses, plus call-outs between visits if you spot something. Each visit checks bait points and monitoring, looks for signs of activity and new ways in, and is recorded in a pest control log you keep on site.

The law and inspections

Food hygiene law requires food businesses to have adequate procedures to control pests. A contract isn't a legal requirement in itself, but regular, documented checks are the usual way to show an environmental health officer that you have those procedures. A serious infestation can lead to a lower food hygiene rating or, in the worst cases, closure until it's dealt with.

Call-outs

Rats in a store room, cockroaches in a kitchen, wasps around a beer garden or birds in a loading bay: one-off problems are dealt with too, and regular visits can be set up afterwards to stop them happening again.

What it costs

Contracts are priced on the size of the premises, the type of business and the number of visits a year. A one-off pest survey typically costs £80 to £150 in the UK in 2026 (Fantastic Services). You get a fixed price after a site survey.
