Signs of moles
- Fresh heaps of fine soil (molehills) in lawns, borders and fields, often in lines
- Raised ridges across the lawn where tunnels run just under the surface
- Patches of lawn that feel spongy underfoot
Why get them dealt with
Moles eat worms and insects, not plants, but their tunnelling ruins lawns, sports pitches and paddocks, undermines plant roots and can leave ground uneven enough to trip on. Soil from molehills can also spoil grass cut for animal feed. One mole can create a lot of molehills, so the damage often looks worse than the numbers behind it.
How we deal with them
Trapping is the main professional method. Strychnine, once widely used, has been banned since 2006. We find the active tunnels, set traps in the main runs and check them regularly until the moles are caught. Most gardens are cleared in a few visits, though moles from neighbouring land can move in later, especially on the edge of fields.
What it costs
Mole catching is usually priced per visit or per job, depending on the size of the area and how many moles are active. You get a fixed price once we know what we're dealing with.

Questions people ask
Do sonic mole repellers work?
There's little reliable evidence that they do. Moles may move a short distance and come back.
When are moles most active?
All year, but molehills appear most in autumn, winter and early spring, when the ground is soft and moles are digging new tunnels and nests.
Can I flood or gas the tunnels myself?
Flooding rarely works, and gassing is restricted to trained, certified operators. Trapping is the safest and most reliable method.
