Signs of mice

  • Small dark droppings, about the size of a grain of rice, in cupboards, drawers and behind appliances
  • Nibbled food packets, and shredded paper, fabric or loft insulation used for nesting
  • Scratching in ceilings, walls and under floors, usually in the evening and at night
  • A musty, ammonia-like smell in cupboards or the loft
  • Faint grease marks along skirting boards and around pipes

Why they come in

Mice move indoors when the weather turns cold in autumn and winter, looking for warmth and food. A mouse can squeeze through a gap about the width of a pencil, so the usual routes are gaps around pipes and cables, under kitchen units, around boilers and through air bricks.

In terraced and semi-detached homes they can also travel between houses through shared lofts and floor voids. If you share walls with neighbours, it's worth letting them know, so the problem is treated on both sides.

How we deal with them

We find where the mice are active and how they're getting in, then treat with bait in tamper-resistant stations or with traps, placed out of reach of children and pets. Follow-up visits check that activity has stopped. We seal the gaps they're using, or show you where they are, so the next mice can't follow.

What it costs

Mouse treatment in the UK typically costs £120 to £300 for a course of treatment in 2026, outside London (Fantastic Services). You get a fixed price, covering the follow-up visits, before we start.

Questions people ask

Will mice go away on their own?

Rarely. Once mice have found food and somewhere warm to nest, they breed quickly, and a pair can become a large infestation within a few months. It's quicker and cheaper to deal with early.

I've only seen one mouse. Is it worth treating?

Usually, yes. Mice are good at staying out of sight, so if you've seen one there are often more. Droppings in several places are a good sign there's an established problem.

Do ultrasonic plug-in repellers work?

There's little reliable evidence that they work for long. Sealing the gaps mice use is far more effective.
